Plans for around 100 new homes at the Wadworth and Co brewery site in Devizes have been announced.

Wiltshire based housebuilder Backhouse have confirmed that they will be regenerating the land on Northgate Street with Wadworth set to construct a new complex off London Road.

The brewers initially published their proposal to move to a more modern facility in November 2021, after spending 147 years in the town centre, and have now exchanged contracts to sell a substantial part of its current site to Backhouse.

Backhouse are now seeking planning permission to build around 100 new homes, public open spaces, new pedestrian routes and a retail unit while preserving the Grade II listed brewery tower.

Stuart Walter, Land and Planning Manager at Backhouse, is hoping to create a significant legacy through the development.

He said: “We are delighted to exchange contracts with Wadworth on this iconic site which will be one of the most significant housing projects in the town for years.

“It is our ambition to create an exemplar mixed use development and build much needed homes for local people.

“Being a local housebuilder, we are truly inspired by the opportunity to work closely with Wadworth to design a standout new neighbourhood for Devizes and in doing so, build a strong legacy for Wadworth Brewery and the local community.”

David Anderson of Architects Anderson Holland Green, who designed the development, added: “This is an opportunity to bring exciting and forward-looking place making to the town”.

The scheme will include several environmental features, such as electric vehicle chargers, air source heat pumps, high energy performing buildings and homes and public spaces enhanced by greenery.

Backhouse say they are also conscious to reinforce the town’s local identity and plan to integrate into landmarks such as the brewery tower.

Mr Walter added: “We understand the historical importance of this site and want to reassure local people we have an exciting, as well as sensitive plan, for the development”.

Toby Bartholomew, Managing Director at Wadworth and Co, agreed: “After working hard to find a developer who has the same aspirations to unlock the potential of the current Northgate site, we’re delighted that we have exchanged contracts with Backhouse who have shown it understands the significance and importance of the development to Devizes”.

Backhouse will be engaging with the community and key stakeholders to help shape the project and have invited local people to view the initial plans at a public exhibition on 14 December from 3pm to 7pm at Devizes Town Hall.
