Thousands of runners and walkers have packed into the Avebury basecamp for the Race to the Stone this weekend.

Around 3,400 ultra-marathon enthusiasts are tackling one of the UK's most popular endurance events.

It is 100km long along The Ridgeway from Risborough to Avebury.

Celebrated as Britain’s oldest path, the route follows the historic trail past Wayland’s Smithy, Uffington White Horse and Barbury Castle before reaching the iconic ancient Stone Circle at Avebury.

The Dixons Carphone 'Race to the Stones', voted the UK’s Best Endurance Event for the past three years,is now on day two.

Thousands have passed the 50km mark yesterday, with the toughest runners tackling another 50km today.

Run by Threshold Sports, the race is one of the first mass participation events taking place after the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions were eased.

Nick Tuppen, chief executive of Threshold Sports, said: “Following a virtual edition of the Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones last year, we’re so excited to welcome the Threshold Trail Series community back to Wiltshire to do the real thing again this summer."
