FURIOUS locals have turned detective to track down fly-tippers blighting a beauty spot.

They took action after piles of rubbish – including many Amazon boxes – were dumped on the Pewsey Downs.

Angry walkers have even tried to get the delivery giant to take action but as yet it has not.

The rubbish, on MoD land, includes paint pots, a dismantled shed and old kitchen units, as well as a box sent from a company distributing Chinese mirrors.

Jill Reeve was one of those upset by the mess. She said: “We are lucky enough to live in a really beautiful area of Britain. The unrivalled walking has been such a bonus during these lockdown months.

“More’s the pity that some scumbag thought it a good idea to dump a pile of rubbish in Everleigh Ashes between the green barn and Cow Down.

“I would have had no hesitation in naming and shaming, but the culprit had thoughtfully removed all identification.”

Jill took to Facebook to post images of the rubbish, prompting dozens of others to join the effort to get something done.

Rob Keeping added: “There’s a date of creation and an address which means it should be traceable by the relevant people making some good enquiries. It just depends whether the relevant authority can be bothered to follow it up.”

Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for waste said: “We are aware of the waste fly tipped on MoD land near Everleigh and it is currently under investigation. The size of the fly-tip would indicate that this was waste collected for financial gain and as such the waste carrier would not have been able to dispose of it at a Household Recycling Centre as this is commercial waste.

“We would urge people to avoid using a ‘man and a van’ or those advertising tip runs on social media without checking their credentials.”

But the latest in a long line of trash tipping in Wiltshire’s beauty spots has hit a raw nerve.

“I keep cleaning up the road here in Wilcot, people seem to think their McDonald's rubbish is needed in the wilds,” Andrea Catchpole added.

Others are blaming the lack of council provision, claiming that fly-tipping is increasing as it is difficult to dispose of rubbish.

Litter has also been reported in villages near Marlborough. A secret cider drinker has been hurling empty cans of Scrumpy Jack on to verges around Stowell, Wilcot and Oare.

And lockdown easing has been blamed for an increase in rubbish dumping around Cherhill Monument.

Malmesbury resident Ben Thornbury said there has been a ‘dramatic’ rise in litter around Daniel’s Well in the town.

He said: “It endangers livestock and animals and makes people think ‘well what a disgusting place to be’ and they might not even come back.”

The Gazette & Herald contacted Amazon.

The company responded, but said it wasn’t sure how to help on this occasion.
