A Malmesbury Facebook group set up to share pictures and stories of days gone by is celebrating it’s fifth birthday.

Malmesbury Now & Then also supports other organisations in the town to help keep its heritage alive for future generations.

In 2019 the group raised more than £7500 for the Athelstan Museum and the Malmesbury Civic Trust through the subscription and sales of its first book - entitled Malmesbury Now and Then.

The book detailed the history of the town through 300 never-before seen photos sold all 700 copies in just under three weeks.

Another book is due to be launched at the end of 2020 and proceeds from the second book will also go to both charities.

Founder Alison Cross-Jones said: “The group’s exceeded all my expectations and the time has gone so quickly. Over the last five years we’ve seen numerous reunion events, other groups have stemmed from this group, and our membership covers almost every corner of the globe not forgetting our successful books. It’s been amazing.

“I can’t thank the members enough for their support and contributions over these last 5 years; without them there wouldn’t be a group. Not forgetting the wider team that support and make the group and our book projects possible.

“These groups are a great way of keeping heritage and history alive. We’re looking to start other groups too, to because it’s a great and unique way of keeping heritage and history alive.”

Hay Blake group admin of Malmesbury Now & Then added: “The stories and pictures are truly fascinating. We’ve seen people reconnecting with old friends as well as sharing stories & memories, its lovely to be a part of it all.

“Many Thanks to Charles Vernon and Mayors Julie Exton and Campbell Ritchie for their support and the entire book team for dedicating their time in 2019 and this year.”

Sue Savine of the admin team said:“Being a member of this group and one of the admin team, is one of the happiest times of my life. A highlight for me has been learning so much more about the town and its history. Over 200 people have subscribed to the new book before the book is even published and that’s amazing.”

The Now & Then brand has expanded its reach and now has Malmesbury Villages, Royal Wootton Bassett, Lyneham, Cirencester and Highworth with a combined membership of 7259 with members locally and across the globe.
