ORGANISERS of Pewsey Carnival have decided to cancel this year's event.
They say that the large crowds which attend the annual event are incompatible with current social distancing restrictions.
In addition, the main source of income for it comes from Cossor's Shop in the high street, which has been closed since the beginning of the outbreak lockdown in March.
Carol Parsons who heads the carnival committee said in a statement: "We are currently investigating the possibility of running modified or new events in a safe manner, and further information will be released when known.
"We are confident you will understand the necessity of safeguarding our families, friends and guests from the risk of Covid-19."
The annual event usually takes place in mid-September and sees the village of Pewsey transform with illuminated processions of floats made by local people, and wheelbarrow races between the pubs.
The carnival itself dates back to 1898 and is Wiltshire's oldest carnival.
