CHIPPENHAM continued their rich points-scoring form in South West One East as a decisive final half-hour ended the resistance of local rivals Royal Wootton Bassett in a 36-11 triumph on Saturday.

The home side, who have scored in excess of 1,000 points this season eventually wore down their county rivals to remain in third place in the division with three matches remaining, debutant Louis Ayliffe scoring a brace of tries.

Bassett missed an early shot at goal but it was Chippenham who got on the board first at Allington Field as Aaron Clark went over for the opening converted try after an extended phase of possession, Dan Wainwright with the extras.

The visitors then enjoyed an excellent spell of pressure with second row and skipper Dave Hogg returning from a three-month injury lay-off to slot two penalties.

Bassett also had a clear advantage in the scrum and a pushover try by number eight Tim Gallimore took them into the lead.

In first-half added time though, wing Ayliffe finished well after Charlie Palmer had rampaged upfield as Chippenham took a one-point advantage.

A flurry of yellow cards arrived in the second half, Charlie Newman and Lewis Surry for Chippenham, who also had a Brad Doggett try disallowed before Wainwright's penalty nudged the hosts further clear.

With Bassett hampered by losing front row forwards Phil Bardwell and Simon Anderton to injury, Chippenham cut loose late on, Ayliffe crossing for his second try before Will Waddington went over to secure the bonus point.

Palmer added a fifth late on, Wainwright adding three more second-half conversions to seal victory.
