CHIPPENHAM delivered arguably their finest result of the season so far as they downed South West One East leaders Old Patesians at Allington Field on Saturday.

Postponed two weeks earlier, the match saw Chippenham inflict only a second league defeat on the champions-elect as they maintained their own challenge for second spot.

The home side dominated the early possession and then found their way across the whitewash through Charlie Palmer under the posts.

Pats roared back, Brad Dogget being yellow-carded for the home side, but a loose pass allowed Jacob Unwin to find Matt Dickens, who returned the favour before Unwin sent Sam Saunders under the posts to finish a 90-metre move.

The visitors scrum began to exert control though and a penalty try, followed by an unconverted score meant they trailed by just two points at the break.

The second half saw more sustained Chippenham pressure, a high loose pass bouncing over defensive hands and into Doggett, who shipped to Lewis Surry who touched down behind the sticks.

Another Pats scrum try followed but Chippenham continued to enjoy swathes of possession and, after Unwin had gone close, Doggett pounced on a looped pass to score the bonus-point try.

The final score came from a sublime Lewis Surry sidestep and Dan Wainwright maintained his perfect day with the boot by adding the conversions, taking Chippenham over the 1,000 point mark for the campaign.
