JORDAN Smith recorded a superb run of six birdies in eight holes to climb the leaderboard at the Maybank Championship in Malaysia after a four-under par second round.

Wiltshire player Smith began his tournament with a two-under 70 on Thursday but after a 68 on Friday, has moved into a tie for 37th place heading into the weekend.

Teeing off at the 10th hole at Saujana Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur, Derry Hill’s Smith opened up with a run of three pars before back-to-back bogeys suggested a tough day was in store.

After recovering with three more pars, Smith registered his first birdie at the 18th hole – his ninth – to get back to one-over at the turn.

That kicked off a birdie blitz for the Bowood professional as Smith went on to birdie holes one and three before three more in a row from five to seven.

Although he could not maintain that until the finish, completing his round with back-to-back pars, Smith returned to the clubhouse having climbed to six-under overall, five shots off the lead.
