JORDAN Smith has made a terrific start to the Irish Open by carding a three-under-par 69 during his opening round in Northern Ireland.

The 24-year-old kick started his round with a birdie three on the opening hole, before improving his score with a birdie four on the fifth.

At the halfway point things were looking good for the Derry Hill man, who is enjoying his first year on the European Tour.

He was then picked up another shot by registering a birdie on the par five 13th at the Portstewart Golf Club.

Smith’s only blemish came on the 16th when he recorded his first bogey of the day on the par four hole.

However, Smith was able to reclaim that extra stroke a hole late with his fourth and final birdie of the day on the par four 17th.
