DAVID Bishop is celebrating his selection for the World University Games in China next month.
The 24-year-old Chippenham international has been told by the Great Britain selectors that he is in the squad to run the 1500m in Shenzhen from August 12-23.
“I am really happy with that and it will be my first British vest,” said Bishop.
“The past few days have been really nerve-wracking waiting to hear whether I was in the team – I have been checking my email non-stop!
“I’m delighted with the news as this is a big championship and there could be a lot of high profile athletes there. “It will be the biggest race I have ever done. The NCAAs (National Collegiate Athletic Association) in America are pretty big but I think this tops it.”
Bishop’s selection followed a fine season in his final year as a student at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, the highlight being his personal best of 3mins 41.12secs at the Mt SAC Relays, in California, in April, which put him seventh in the UK rankings.
Since returning home Bishop, a former student at Hardenhuish School, has won the 1500m at the British Milers’ Club Grand Prix in Solihull (3:43.05).
“Now I can get back into hard training and race the UK Championships and World trials before flying out to China,” added Bishop.
