ELATED chairman Darren Perrin hopes to see many more special days like Saturday's FA Vase last-16 triumph over Tring Athletic despite admitting the current cup run is putting him through the emotional wringer.

Perrin, clad in his black and yellow Melksham Town scarf, conceded he could barely watch the closing stages of the 2-1 win at Oakfields that took his men through to Monday lunchtime's quarter-final draw.

Kieran Baggs' side have comfortably surpassed the club's best-ever Vase run - they reached the fourth round in both 2014-15 and 2016-17 - and now join the likes of Stockton Town, Windsor, Thatcham Town, Marske United and Bracknell Town in the last eight, the draw for which will be made on TalkSport.

While his side's progress may be bad for the nerves, Perrin is nonetheless thrilled by the levels his club are reaching on their run.

"I'm just elated and delighted for everybody at the football club,'' he said. "I'm delighted for Kieran and the players - they were absolutely fantastic.

"It was a special day, with a crowd of 1,236 which exceeded our expectations by about 200.

"To be fair, it was probably a little bit too easy in the first 20-25 minutes. It probably looked at that time how many we were going to win by.

"But all credit to Tring and in the end we were desperate for the final whistle.''

Perrin conceded he and many others had been put through the shredder as Melksham held a slender lead in the dying moment after strikes by Mike Perrott and Rob Hobbs had given them an early two-goal lead, which was halved by Luke Dunstan's solo effort.

"It was excruciating. This club means everything to me and my family and to see this by the community of Melksham and to see nearly 1,300 people here just speaks volumes,'' added Perrin "I'm just pleased for everybody associated with the club, but especially our two presidents, my dad (Mick) and Dave Phillips.

"They put in over 52 years each at this football club and without those two I wouldn't be here talking now.

"They were great scenes at the final whistle but we've got to look at the bigger picture. We'll keep our feet on the floor and look forward to the draw on Monday.''
