TWO tries in the final 15 minutes secured Trowbridge a victory over local rivals Devizes that had looked unlikely up to that point.

Devizes had the better of a close first half, but Trowbridge broke the deadlock when a strong run from number eight Dan Smith was stopped short of the line.

The ball was recycled to prop Sean Jones who was able to ground the ball for the first try converted by Lloyd Davis.

However, the Saddlebacks’ three-quarters had looked threatening andm shortly before the interval they broke through as winger Paul Kulpers went under the posts and Andy Thompson levelled the scores with the conversion.

Devizes notably upped their game in the second half and it came as no surprise when they took the lead when winger Steve McCraith touched down for his 11th of the season.

The try was converted by Thompson but Trowbridge fought back and enjoyed their best spell of the game.

The visitors’ Julian Taylor was yellow carded before a good Trowbridge move ended with replacement winger Aaron Bray going over wide out.

Davis’ conversion was ruled out despite one of the touch judges awarding it.

A mistake in defence allowed Devizes back into the game when fly-half Thompson scored an easy try which he converted himself.

With the score at 21-12 to the visitors it looked all over for the home team.

But Trowbridge staged a remarkable comeback, firstly Ashley Chalk scored out wide after a fine cross kick from Davis.

Then with time running out, Jones scored his second try of the game – and his 17th of the season – to give the home team a bonus-point win.

Devizes now need bonus point wins in their final two matches against Melksham and Blandford to give them a chance of a top-three finish.
