IN A repeat of last season’s Knockout Cup final Ben Howe’s Boomsbury side locked horns with Steve Burns Melksham Town Reserves in the semi-final of this season’s Chantry Digital sponsored competition.

For Boomsbury, who lost last term's showpiece final 3-2 and were also beaten in the final of the A&B Cup 3-2 by the same opponents, it was a case of third time lucky as Howe’s men sent the holders crashing out courtesy of a 2-0 win which was an excellent second-half performance from keeper Luke Mayne.

Boomsbury had the better of the early exchanges and took the lead on 15 minutes when Dan Dominy burst through the Melksham defence to make it 1-0.

Melksham had chances to get back on level terms but they were unable to test the hosts keeper who was equal to everything that came his way.

The second half saw keeper Mayne produce three breathtaking stops as he kept Boomsbury in the game and when Booker Woodford headed home following a corner to give Howe’s side a 2-0 lead, Melksham saw their grip on the cup disappear as Boomsbury were able to see the game out without being really troubled.

Castle Combe 0 Westbury United Reserves 1

HAVING already suffered defeat at the hands of Castle Combe in the A&B Cup, Westbury United Reserves who hadn’t beaten Stewart McMillan’s side in three attempts this term, came up trumps on their fourth attempt as a 1-0 victory at Combe saw them set up a Knockout Cup final meeting with Boomsbury.

The only goal of the game was scored in the first half by Westbury’s player-manager Pete Ayton who ran between two defenders to plant home a Paul Beavers cross which settled a game that never really came to life.

Westbury’s defence were well marshalled as the kept a Combe side at bay for the remainder of the game.
