DAVE Turner admitted that his side were fortunate to be awarded the last-ditch penalty that allowed them to complete a dramatic comeback win over Carterton in the Hellenic League Challenge Cup last weekend.
Alex Green bundled in the winner after Mitch Wyatt saw his spot-kick saved but the Wootton Bassett manager was left baffled by the referee’s decision, despite it leading to the clinching blow for his team.
“With about 30 minutes to go, we got denied a stonewall penalty, which the linesman gave but the referee overruled,” said Turner.
“Then he goes and gives us one late on that nobody thought was a penalty and I didn’t either – maybe he had an attack of conscience?”
James Blake and Wyatt netted for Bassett and after the visitors led 3-2, Liam Edmonson equalised in the 90th minute.
Shortly afterwards, Green popped up with the winner after Bassett’s controversial penalty.
