Chippenham Town’s involvement in the Red Insure Cup was ended at the first round stage by local rivals Swindon Supermarine earlier tonight, courtesy of two goals from former Bluebird Ashley Edenborough.

Shaun Lamb made his long-awaited return from a knee injury while former Corsham Town midfielder Ross Lye and youngsters Ollie Webb and Jordan Mathews lined up for Adie Mings’ side.

However, Chippenham were behind just two minutes in when Edenborough took advantage of a mistake by Bluebirds keeper Will Puddy.

Harry Etheridge pumped a high ball into the box and Puddy couldn’t keep hold under pressure, leaving the Marine striker with an open goal to slot home into.

The hosts’ Steve Cook shot wide from Kyle Lapham’s cross while Edenborough also curled an effort the wrong side of the post from a good position in the box.

The Bluebirds had to wait until the 42nd minute to create their first chance, with Alex Kite heading into Kent Kaupinnen’s hands when he met Aaron Wilson’s cross from the right wing.

Three minutes later, the home crowd were up in arms and demanding a penalty when Greg Tindle made a last-ditch challenge on Edenborough in the box - referee Stephen Phillips wouldn’t be swayed and indicated that the Chippenham defender got the ball.

The Bluebirds were left with injury concerns in the opening stages of the second period, with both Kite and Scott Lye forced off.

Marine winger Nick Stanley powered a dangerous ball across the area on the hour mark before shortly afterwards, Chippenham’s Jack Pitcher robbed the hosts’ Dave Bampton and put in strike partner Mathews, who fired a low shot into the arms of Kaupinnen.

In the 70th minute, Edenborough had the ball in the net again after he latched on to Stanley’s deflected free-kick but the goal was ruled out for offside.

At the other end, James Guthrie volleyed a powerful shot over the bar after the Marine keeper beat away Ross Stearn’s cross.

75 minutes in, Edenborough did get his second of the night after Cook raced the byline and cut back onto his right foot before firing a cross to the far post.

His fellow striker was on hand to gratefully nod the ball into the net and kill off any chance of a Chippenham comeback.
