DISABLED Foxham rider Toby Bevins saw off allcomers at the West Wilts Equestrian Centre’s senior BS (British Showjumping) meeting at Holt, writes KATE HEALEY.

The 18 year old, who is paraplygic, has represented Britain in para showjumping competitions in Europe and has proved just as adept amongst able-bodied riders.

At West Wilts he scored a fine double, starting with a win in the 95cms Open, where he finished ahead of Beaufort Hunt Pony Club’s Jasmine Punter and Miss Darco.

Bevins’ partner was the veteran Irish bred bay Grange Quest and the pair went on to also head the bigger 1.05m Open class.

“Toby was amazing at West Wilts – there were around 25 in each class and he was very quick in the jump-offs,” said mum Annie, who works as a vet. “Danny, as we call Grange Quest, is very careful and even though he’s 22 can still turn corners like a 12.2 pony.

“When Toby first had him he took the mickey out of him a bit but now, as he has had him for five years, Toby has got the making of him.”

Bevins, who previously studied at Lackham College, is now at Hereward College near Coventry, where he is doing a Sports Leadership course.

“He just comes home every other weekend,” Annie added.

“He’s enjoying the college but missing his horses. Danny may go up there to be near him if it can be arranged – he has to be assessed in an individual sport as part of his course so riding may help with this.”

Veteran Bath rider Bina Ford scored a double on what is now her only competition ride, Tea Time III, who headed the 1.15 and 1.20m Opens.

This took the pair up to 30 wins in a great season and they have also qualified for the National Amateur Championships at Aintree at the end of November.

There was also a win for Malmesbury’s Kathryn Harris, best known as an event rider, who was first on her mare Zambezi, and third in the British Novice.

Splitting her two rides was 2010 Badminton winner Paul Tapner.
