KAREN Funnell missed out on her bid to win three Wiltshire county titles on ladies finals day at Amesbury.

A member of the highly successful ladies section at the Box Club she won the final event of the day, ladies two-wood singles, but was beaten in the four-wood singles and triples finals.

But the Box club finished as top club with two wins as previous winners Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs won the ladies pairs.

Funnell was always in command in the two-wood final against Diana Acheson (Pewsey) leading 6-1 at five ends and was 12-3 up at 10 and had sealed a 17-5 success after only 16 ends.

But in the four-wood singles in the morning Funnell always trailed Margaret Annetts (Salisbury) and lost 21-9.

In the triples, Funnell, along with Jean Collier and Carol Grenfell led Amesbury 5-4 after five ends but they did not collect another shot in the next five ends and found themselves 16-5 down at ten.

They never recovered and finally went down 19-10.

In the morning 2003 pairs champions Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs trailed a Wilton duo 8-5 at five ends but had edged 13-11 up at ten.

They had pulled well clear at 15 ends leading 20-12 but then had to withstand a fightback and finally won 21-18.

Wootton Bassett’s Lucy Smith became the youngest winner on ladies finals day for many years.

Smith, who turned 16 last month, triumphed in a tight U25 singles title beating Lauren Williams (Avon) 21-18.

She was 7-2 up early on but pegged back to 7-6 at ten ends.

The two girls were tied 8-8 and then 10-10 at 15 ends.

Williams edged 16-15 up at 20 ends but back came Smith to claim a 21-18 success after 26 ends.

It was the first time Smith had entered an individual national competition while for the unlucky Williams it was her third defeat in a row in the Under 25 singles having previous lost to Bassett’s Harding sisters Victoria and then Charlotte.

The fours final, which has been dominated by Box in recent years, saw a first-time winner as Warminster came from 18-17 down at 15 ends to roar away to a 32-19 victory over Stratton Churchway at 20 ends.

Warminster had been runners-up twice in the fours championship in 1958 and 1987 but had never won the title since county finals began way back in 1947.

All of the finalists at Amesbury also qualify to represent Wiltshire at the National Championships starting at Leamington this weekend.
