Jaz Carlin admits she’s got a point to prove as she prepares for a Battle of Britain at next week’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Carlin, 20, made a flying start to the season and ruled the roost over fellow freestyle swimmers, double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington and two-time world silver medallist Jo Jackson.

At the European Championships in Budapest this summer, Adlington and Jackson exacted revenge, however, as the Wootton Bassett girl failed to reach the final of either the 200m or 400m freestyle competitions.

She did finish sixth fastest in the 400m heats but with European Championship rules dictate that only two competitors from each nation can advance, meaning Carlin was left high and dry.

In Delhi however, Carlin will be bidding to make amends as she dons the Welsh colours and looks to get one over on England duo Jackson and Adlington.

“The Europeans were a mixture of positive and negative,” said Carlin, who was part of the British quartet who won 4x200m freestyle bronze in Budapest.

“I was really pleased with my relays splits but then really disappointed to miss out in the 400m freestyle, coming sixth in the heats but as the third Brit, which meant I didn’t make the final.

“I had a mixture of emotions so I am going out to Delhi to prove a point and show that I should be there in the final. So I have got to aim for the top and see what I can do really.

“I am going there to represent Wales so my competition is everyone. Obviously there are a few friendly faces from the British team and they will be there in the call room.

“At the Europeans I just missed out on the 400m freestyle final to Rebecca Adlington and Jo Jackson and obviously that was a bit devastating but I think compared to them I am still the youngest and I am still learning whereas they have got the Olympic medals to back them up.

“It is always going to be hard to better them but hopefully come next week I will be swimming fast and I can improve on previous performances.”
