Calne Town’s good start to the season continued with a pulsating victory at Keynsham on Tuesday night.

The Lilywhites, who have been in free-scoring form for much of the campaign, took a 4-1 lead into the last 20 minutes, through two goals each for Glenn Armstrong and Owen Bryan But late Keynsham pressure brought two goals to set up an exciting finale, in which the hosts were denied a strong penalty claim.

Calne’s joint-manager Jeff Roberts said: “In the first 45 minutes we played very well and took the game to them.

“We should have come away with 6-1 to be honest.

“But we sat back and they dominated the game in the last 20 minutes. Then we were on the back foot.”

Calne, who were defeated 3-1 at Wiltshire rivals Bradford Town on Saturday, host Downton of Wessex League Division One in the FA Vase on Saturday But despite a number of injury concerns joint-manager Nick Vitale is hoping the team can keep the run going.

“A cup run is great – for momentum and for the finances.

“We know it’s going to be hard but the more we progress, the more money it brings to the club”

Roberts added: “We’ve got a good, young side and we’re capable on our day but we have to be on our toes.’’
