Luke Gullick headed a second-half equaliser as Chippenham Town came from behind to draw 1-1 at local rivals Swindon Supermarine on Saturday.

The Bluebirds fell behind four minutes into the second period through a goal from former Chippenham striker Luke Hopper.

Adie Mings’ side started brightly and rattled the woodwork twice in the opening five minutes.

Striker Shaun Benison worked himself into space before unleashing a curling shot that beat Supermarine keeper Matt Bulman before striking the outside of the post.

Minutes later, Chippenham centre-back Ross Adams saw a shot deflected onto the bar following a corner.

Striker Hopper had Supermarine’s first chance of the match but his low shot went wide after he was set up by Robert Hobbs.

Benison was handed a second chance to give the visitors the lead but he shot high and wide after keeper Bulman scuffed a clearance straight to the Bluebirds striker.

Alex Kite also went close to opening the scoring but Bulman produced a good save to keep out the Chippenham defender’s diving header.

Four minutes after half-time, the home side took the lead.

Winger Hobbs picked up a cross on the right-hand side of the area before drilling a ball into the six-yard box.

Hopper was on-hand to poke the ball home at the near post against his former team.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser and on 60 minutes, their persistence was rewarded when Scott Lye sent a corner to the far post.

Gullick rose highest, sending both himself and the ball hurtling into the net to level the scores.

The winger almost grabbed a second minutes later but his shot was blocked on the line by Supermarine’s Gary Horgan.

Gullick headed just wide from Ben Highmore’s cross before the hosts’ Nick Stanley shot wide after a well-worked free-kick.

Supermarine survived shouts for penalty when Highmore went down in the box before Lewis Powell headed just over after being fed by fellow substitute Danny Wring but Chippenham’s efforts didn’t lead to a winning goal.

A point leaves Mings’ men in seventh, four points of fifth-placed Nuneaton Town.
