YOUNG Devizes judo star Jemima Duxberry has her sights set on a European medal this year, as a tribute to her father and coaching team.

The 15-year-old, who lives in Green Lane, is a member of the England Talent Development Squad and is due to try out for the European Cadet Championships in Kendal, Cumbria, in March. Competing in the championships would mean a Great Britain debut for the teenager, who is ranked as the number one U17 in the country in the 57kg weight division.

“I want to go there for myself and for my dad (Dave) and coach Jason (Parsons),” said Duxberry.

“After the things that they’ve done for me I couldn’t thank them enough and it would be a great way to do it.

“My dad would love to see me with the Great Britain flag on my back and medalling there would be amazing.”

Duxberry, who trains at Devizes Budo Club, claimed the bronze medal at the Dutch Open last weekend but the competitive youngster admits that she was disappointed not to claim the top prize after suffering a defeat in the quarter-finals.

“Looking back, I know I should have won,” she said.

“It was great that I came back to win a medal but I went in to win it.

“Some people go into a competition and say that they want to do well but I was there for the gold.”

Her coach, who travels with her to events, believes that Duxberry should be proud of her performance.

“It’s a high-standard event as the Dutch use it to select their team,” said Parsons.

“She made a mistake in her third fight but after that she stormed through and looked totally dominant.”

Parsons also says that Duxberry’s dedication is second to none.

“She’s been with the club since she was eight and she’s constantly medalling at all the top events,” he said.

“She goes to the gym off her own back and she’s got the right attitude.

“She always listens to what you’ve got to say.”
