Devizes judo starlet Jemima Duxberry is being tipped to become one of the best in the world after adding another medal to her already impressive haul at the weekend.
The 14-year-old earned silver at the Under 52kg European Cadet Trials at Sheffield on Saturday against girls much older and stronger than herself in the under 17 category.
Duxberry also claimed bronze at the British Under 20 trials in January and the man who coaches her believes she can go all the way to the top of the sport.
“She’s outstanding, I’ve seen older players at high performance centres on the British team who don’t have as good a technique as she,” said Jason Parsons, her Devizes Budo Club teammate and coach, who also won gold at the British University Championships at the weekend.
“She has a very special talent. If she is looked after and nurtured properly she could go on to be world class.
“She picks things up as soon as you show her and has great determination. You can have natural ability but you can’t substitute drive for anything.
“If everything goes well I’ve absolutely no doubt she will go on to compete at the Olympics.” Duxberry will now attend a series of continental competitions and training camps over the coming weeks before the GB selectors decide whether to take her to the European Youth Olympic Festival in July.
“I can’t wait to go,” she said.
“It will be good to learn things from different coaches. I’m number two at the moment and know I have to train hard.
“It’s up to me to prove I can beat her and be the best.”
Parsons and teammate Tom Reed, who also won gold at the British University Championships, will compete at the English Senior Open this weekend.
