Chippenham Town produced a rock-solid defensive display to upset big-spending Corby with stand-in centre back Steve Casey proving an unlikely hero.

The former Calne Town player has not started a game since October’s 3-1 cup defeat to Brackley Town where he gave away a penalty and looked off the pace.

But an injury sustained by on-loan Alex Kite meant he was summoned to start on short notice against one of the most prolific attacks in the division.

He recovered swiftly from an early slip that went unpunished and produced a highly accomplished display alongside Ross Adams to help keep the visitors at bay.

“I’ve been struggling a bit with fitness this year as I keep getting bad groins but Adie asked me at training on Thursday if I could play as Alex had a dead leg,” he said.

“I was out for a while earlier in the season then came back and did it again, so it was nice to be back playing.

“We’ve played one of the better sides in the league and turned them over quite convincingly in the end. Hopefully we can push on and start flying up the league.”

Now Casey hungry for more first team action in future.

“I can only do what I can do I suppose and hopefully it will get bit better when I get a bit more match fitness,” he said. “But I’ve been given the opportunity so it’s all in my hands now.”
