An under-strength Devizes slipped to a narrow defeat against Gloucester City thanks to an inspired performance from the home goalkeeper.

Charlie Weatherford gave the visitors an early lead but it should have been more after they attacked the Gloucester net with a barrage of short corners.

They were unable to turn their pressure into a bigger lead though and the hosts fought back just before half time to equalise.

Gloucester emerged for the second half with a renewed sense of vigour and produced a series of fast-flowing moves that stunned Devizes, who were 3-1 down within twenty minutes.

The result looked a formality from then on but Jim Langan scored with minutes to go, capping an excellent move, but it proved no more than a consolation.

“Gloucester improved after the break but we were made to pay for missing our early chances,” said captain Sam Gaiger.

“It’s probably unfortunate that we came across a keeper who had his game of the season as well.

“We stuck at it though and played for the whole game, which is something we haven’t done at time, and while we’re disappointed to lose we are not down-hearted.”

Devizes travel to Isca this Saturday who they drew 2-2 with at home earlier in the season.
