Bassett beaten at the death in high-scoring local derby

The match took place at the Bassett's home ground, drawing a large crowd eager to witness the first derby encounter of the season.

Both teams entered the match buoyed up by their recent victories and were determined to build on their league standings.

Wootton Bassett started strongly, taking the lead early when scrum-half Rhys Floyd converted a penalty just two minutes in.

The home side continued to apply pressure, and hooker Mitchell Gough powered over for a try, with Floyd adding the conversion to extend the lead to ten points.

However, Marlborough quickly responded, with their winger sprinting the length of the field to score under the posts, narrowing the gap to 10-7.

Despite the visitors' resurgence, Bassett maintained their offensive momentum.

Full-back John Fruci-Jewell joined the attack and finished off a well-worked move with another try, which Floyd converted.

As the half progressed, Marlborough found their footing, with their tighthead prop scoring a converted try, followed by a penalty that levelled the scores.

Floyd managed to slot another penalty in added time, sending Bassett into halftime with a narrow 20-17 lead.

The second half saw Bassett initially regain control, with winger Michael Clifton breaking through for a try in the corner, although the conversion was missed.

Bassett continued to dominate, and centre Sean Marsden added another try, with Floyd converting after a retake, extending the lead to 32-17.

However, Marlborough responded with a flurry of attacks, scoring two converted tries and two penalties to take a stunning 37-32 lead.

In a tense finish, veteran Phil Bardwell managed to force his way over for a try, restoring Bassett's lead at 39-37.

Yet, with time running out, Marlborough's fly-half George Shakespeare slotted a crucial penalty, and in added time, they secured an incredible try to seal a 49-37 victory.

Despite the loss, Bassett showcased their potential throughout the match.

They now face a challenging trip to Sidmouth in their next fixture, where they will look to bounce back.
