Swindon Cricket Club are continuing to flourish with more children than ever getting involved with their sessions so far this summer.
After a spring period which has seen plenty of sun, Swindon CC have noticed plenty of people getting involved with the sport, having more than 100 kids playing across their various age groups already this season.
The club has long set up to try and encourage young people to get excited by cricket, as demonstrated by their hosting of the Wiltshire against Glamorgan double header this week.
Club Chair Daniel Harris spoke about how pleased he has been with the progress he has seen in the youth section so far this year.
He said: “We often talk about the top end of things, but across the club, it has been an incredibly busy time.
“We have hit the ground running, and things are just building up and up.
“Last Friday, I reckon there were nearly 150 children on our field playing at the club training night, and that is from the under-5s all the way up to our under-15s and our women’s team.
“It is hard work being involved in any sports club, but when you start to see some really positive fruits of that effort, then it makes it far easier.
“I think that things like the first team would run itself without my involvement, but one of the key things for the club that we have set out over a number of years has been having a focus on being a club that develops the talent.
“We have invested heavily in the club’s facilities, and our coaches too, with our overseas players joining in with that, we had five new coaches going on courses this winter.
“That is what we are setting up for, and we are really proud of that fact.
“When we spend all winter preparing, getting people to attend courses, funding those courses to develop our coaches, and to see that in action is just brilliant.
“Ultimately, as a cricket club, we want to see as many people as possible playing cricket, and we are definitely doing that at the moment.
“In Swindon and North Wiltshire, there is a strong South-East Asian community, and there is a lot of interest from that, and we are seeing that replicated through our youth system.
“We are seeing growth year on year with the number of people that want to get involved, and that can only be a good thing.”
