Swindon Town are no longer looking at James Olayinka and Declan John after their trials with the club came to an end.
The pair had been on trial with Town over the past month having not had a club since leaving Cheltenham Town and Bolton Wanderers respectively as they assessed whether they required further reinforcements in those areas.
Following the closing of the transfer window, during which Clem Morfuni provided an increase to the budget towards the end to facilitate a late flurry of incomings, Swindon had continued to look at outside options to bolster the squad.
Mark Kennedy said that he was surprised that both Olayinka and John had found themselves without a club after the summer and both had impressed during training but said it was not clear if either would become permanent members of the squad.
When asked ahead of the game against Tranmere about the status of the two trialists, Kennedy confirmed that both had left the group and were no longer training with them at Beversbrook.
He said: “No, both of them will not be back.”
Swindon presently have a group of 25 players in the first team creating competition for places when everybody is available.
Whilst Kennedy had made known his admiration for the two players when asked about them in recent weeks, the head coach was clear that nothing was at an advanced stage in regards to a permanent contract for any players.
He said: “Having a trialist in gives you a chance to look at people, there are millions of reasons to have one in but ours are always with a view to looking at someone properly.
“It is not a secret otherwise we would have said to Callum [Knowles] ‘Can you not get them in.’
“We have had a couple in that we really liked but what happens down the line on that, I don’t know.
“We are not down the line on signing anybody, for lots of different reasons.
“I don’t constantly knock on the door and ask for something, I never ask for anything but if I am offered something then I happily accept, as long as it is for the right reasons and for the good of the squad and the club.
“Clem has gone way above and beyond on doing that, our budget has been maximised, so I am not knocking on his door and saying ‘Can we sign Declan?’ or anything like that.”
