Gavin Gunning said that there was “nothing to” his decision to name goalkeeper Jack Bycroft as captain for Swindon Town on Saturday.
Against Doncaster Rovers, club captain Charlie Austin was left on the bench and January signing and boyhood Town fan Bycroft was handed the captain’s armband in his stead by Gunning.
Austin will generally wear the armband, but Frazer Blaker-Tracy has been named as captain on seven occasions this season when the club’s top goal scorer has not started the match.
Eyebrows were raised when, despite Blake-Tracy being named in the starting line-up on Saturday, it was Bycroft who was chosen to lead the team out.
The 22-year-old only arrived at the County Ground in January and has made a total of 12 EFL appearances in his career but was given the responsibility of captaining the side for the first time.
The interim head coach was quizzed on his decision after the match and said that there was no larger issue at the centre of his decision.
He said: “It was just that I thought I should give it to Jack and build his confidence up or whatever. There was nothing to it.
“[Were you looking for a fresh voice in the dressing room?] No.”
