SWINDON Town are set to be on the search for their next manager, so who do the bookmakers think is in line to take over?

Ben Garner is set to depart Swindon to become the new manager of Charlton Athletic after just one year in charge at the County Ground, meaning there is a vacancy in the dugout at Swindon.

The early favourite to take over is former England international Sol Campbell, who managed to keep Macclesfield up against the odds in his first job in management before being relegated from League One at Southend on points-per-game in 2019/20.

Campbell has been without a job since departing Southend, but largely had his hands tied in first two jobs as both clubs were in serious financial trouble, which meant the former Arsenal defender could not sign any players during his time with the Shrimpers.

Second favourite for the job at the moment is the highly experienced Paul Tisdale, he managed Exeter City for 12 years before winning promotion from League Two with MK Dons.

Since then Tisdale has struggled in his jobs, having been sacked by MK Dons in November of his first season in League One with just one point, he then Garner at Bristol Rovers in 2020 but was sacked with the club on course for relegation.

Last season Tisdale took charge of Stevenage in November 2021, but was sacked five months later having only won three matches with Boro.

The man with equal odds with Tisdale at present is former Swindon loanee and Manchester United great Michael Carrick.

The holding midfielder played eight times on loan at Swindon in 1999, before having a distinguished career with West Ham, Tottenham, and United, where he won every club honour as a player before taking up a coaching role with the club.

Carrick left the Red Devils back in December after a brief spell as caretaker manager after the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in which he beat Villareal and Arsenal, as well as drawing with Chelsea.

This is the 40-year-old’s only experience as a manager to date and he was in the running for the Lincoln job before they appointed Mark Kennedy earlier this month.

Other managers who are on the bookie’s early shortlist are former Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson, another Swindon loan player in Ryan Mason, ex-Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell, Kenny Jackett who was replaced by Richie Wellens at Leyton Orient, and current England coach Chris Powell.
