CHIPPENHAM Town manager Mike Cook is concerned about a lack of goals from his team following a 1-1 draw with Hampton & Richmond Borough on Saturday.

After a goalless first 40 minutes at the Thornbury Surfacing Stadium, Swindon Town loanee Harrison Minturn stole in at the back post from a corner to poke the Bluebirds in front.

And despite dominating possession for a second game in a row, Chippenham conceded late on when Ruaridh Donaldson smashed a shot into the top-left corner from the edge of the box.

The low-scoring stalemate means the Bluebirds have now netted just three times in their past five games as they dropped down to 10th in National League South.

Cook said: “We should have got six points out of the last two games.

“When we went down to Welling and lost 1-0, I thought: “well, we didn’t really create much and we didn’t deserve much out of the game. They took the chance and got 11 behind the ball.”

“But the two following games, we’ve dominated all the key stats – we had 17 chances in both games.

“But we’re probably not getting enough shots on target as what we need to. We need to be hitting the target with eight or nine chances to score one goal at the moment.

“Six weeks ago, when we were winning games 4-1 and 6-0, it was with players like Ricky Aguiar and Harry Parsons – we don’t have that little bit of extra quality anymore.”

If Cook’s men were hoping for a relegation-threatened team who are out of form to play next in a bid to find some confidence, they will be out of luck.

Braintree Town might be down the wrong end of the points table, but as far as form goes, over the past 10 games they’re fifth while Chippenham are eighth.

That fact makes this “one of the worst times to play them”, according to Cook.

He said: “They’ve gone on an unbelievable run lately. They beat Slough on Tuesday with a goal in the 88th minute.

“When we had them at our place, we were winning 1-0 and they got 11 men behind the ball. They equalised in something like the 95th minute with a goal-mouth scramble.

“All they do is chuck the ball in the box from throw-ins and corners, they don’t play any football whatsoever.

“To be fair to Ryan (Maxwell), since he came in, they must be somewhere near the top of the form game. This is probably one of the worst times to play them.”
