ATHLETICS reporter Kevin Fahey rounds up the best of the action involving Wiltshire athletes last week.

Chippenham’s Harry Maxwell won heat seven of the 1500m at the final Bill Whistlecroft open meeting in Yeovil.

Indeed, he not only won but slashed almost five seconds off his PB with a time of 4mins 27.80secs to go third in the South West Rankings for U15 boys.

Team Bath’s Ciara Galpin, still in the U15 age group, beat all the older athletes in the women’s high jump to record 1.50m, 1cm lower than the PB she set at this track two weeks ago.

Fellow high jumper Josh Maxwell, who also ran the 1500m, cleared a PB of 1.45m while Lottie Silverton (U17) ran 5.19.31 in the women’s 1500m.

Chippenham’s Owen Merrett, from Yate & District AC, followed up his PB of 63.37m last month with another solid throw of 62.53m to win the U20 men’s hammer at the Loughborough & England Athletics Throws Pathway Invitational.

Meanwhile, over in Cardiff, Alex Knight ran two PBs of 12.02secs in the U17 men’s 100m and 24.24secs in the 200m, and Joel Mattacks from Southleigh (U20) leapt to a new lifetime best of 5.92m in the U20 men’s long jump.
