ADVER Sport spoke to Plymouth Live’s Chris Errington to gain the inside scoop on Swindon Town’s next opponents, Plymouth Argyle.

AS: Argyle have recovered from a poor run of results – what’s been the secret?

CE: They were really struggling before Christmas, losing six games in a row. A 1-0 home win against MK Dons started the turnaround in form and they have been tighter in defence in recent matches than they were previously.

Argyle had leaked 17 goals in those six successive defeats. The goals of top scorer Luke Jephcott continue to be important, with the Wales under-21 international now on 15 for the season and a successful run in the FA Cup has helped boost confidence too.

AS: Has the speculation behind Ryan Lowe’s future caused any negative side effects?

CE: Ryan Lowe has been linked by the bookies with vacancies Bolton Wanderers, Bristol; City and Sheffield Wednesday over recent months but it has never amounted to more than that. He still has another 18 months on his contract at Argyle and, while you can never rule anything out in football, he seems committed to his long-term ambitions for the club.

AS: How have Argyle fared in the January transfer window?

CE: Just the one permanent signing so far, with Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Niall Ennis signing for an undisclosed fee on a two-and-a-half year contract. Ennis struggled on loan to Burton Albion in the first half of this season but fared much better at Doncaster Rovers last term.

Adam Lewis, a 21-year-old from Liverpool, has been brought in to compete for the left wing-back role after what appears to be a season-ending knee injury for George Cooper and scored on his full debut in the 2-1 win at Sunderland last Tuesday.

Defender Jerome Opoku has also had his loan spell from Fulham extended until the end of the season, but Ryan Lowe remains keen to add another central defender after Niall Canavan’s departure to Bradford City.

AS: Do you think the FA Cup run will have taken anything out of the team?

CE: Not so much in the cup run but the travelling that they have had to do lately could be an issue. They have played away games against Huddersfield Town, Sunderland and Sheffield United over the past fortnight and all of them have been hard fought.

Argyle stayed up in Sunderland after their game at the Stadium of Light so at least they returned to Plymouth at their leisure on the Wednesday and then trained at Home Park on the Thursday night before heading back up north to play Sheffield United.

AS: Game and score prediction?

CE: I’m not one for making score predictions this season. Swindon have some good attacking players so Argyle will need to be defensively resilient to come away with a positive result. Midfielder Panutche Camara is emerging as a really promising goalscoring midfielder so Swindon will need to pay attention to him.
