SWINDON Town defender Akin Odimayo is excited by the prospect of a new deal at the club but has vowed to carry on working hard and putting in quality performances at the back.

The 20-year-old has been a welcome addition at the County Ground and has adapted quickly to the speed of League One after signing as a successful trialist over the summer.

The former Reading Under-23s man has impressed staff at Town with his power, athleticism, and willingness to learn in training during his brief spell so far.

So much so, manager Richie Wellens revealed the young defender is in line to receive a new contract at the club.

But while talks are still in their preliminary stages between Swindon and Odimayo’s agent, the young defender revealed he is still surprised about how quickly his career changed for the better.

He said: “There has been talks around sorting out a new deal for me, but I don’t really focus on that side of things.

“I’m just trying to perform well and keep playing well in every single game. That’s where my focus lies, but hopefully we can get something sorted soon.

“I’m definitely surprised about how quickly the new deal has come about though.

“I’ve been happy and excited to just play in the team, so getting the opportunity to play is what I’ve been most pleased about.

“I just need to carry on doing what I’ve been doing because that’s what has got me into this position now.”

Odimayo has only featured six times in a Town shirt – starting in all but one – since his opening day debut in the League Cup against Charlton Athletic.

The 20-year-old said he plans to stay at Town for years to come yet, and thanked everyone at the club for making him feel so welcome since he arrived in the summer.

Odimayo said: “I’m happy at Swindon because they’ve shown faith in me.

The gaffer and everyone else around the club has shown so much faith in me, I definitely want to repay that and I’m not looking to go anywhere any time soon.

“I didn’t expect to get thrown straight into the team when I came, but that’s what you want as a player.

“You don’t want to be stuck on the bench, you want to be buzzing to play, so getting the opportunity to play as much as I have has been amazing.

“Hopefully I’ll continue to play well and the results will start to come for us.”
