THE 2019/20 season will live long in the memory for all Swindon Town fans.

Not only did Richie Wellens’ men become only the fourth team in the club’s 141-year history to win a championship, they did so in the most unusual of circumstances.

With the campaign cut 10 games short by the coronavirus pandemic, Town were declared winners of League Two after a crunch EFL meeting this week.

Key members of the squad have secured hero status and the debate is sure to rage among the County Ground faithful about who should lift the prestigious Swindon Advertiser Player of the Year honour when the gongs are handed out later this month.

Names already etched on the Adver trophy include legends such as Don Rogers, John Trollope, Paul Bodin and Fraser Digby.

Whoever takes the honour will succeed team-mate Michael Doughty, who was voted as the star player 12 months ago.

Here’s our shortlist of five for this year’s award - scroll down to cast your vote:

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

STEVEN BENDA: Town’s best goalkeeper since Wes Foderingham, the German looks set to play at the top level. It’s easy to forget the on-loan Swansea City stopper is just 21 and he won Town so many points throughout the season with fine saves or by racing off his line to clear the danger.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

EOIN DOYLE: Scored 25 goals in 28 games and broke a club record with 11 on the trot between October and December. Without the Ginger Pele’s strikes, Town would not have been celebrating another League Two title. It’s as simple as that.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

ANTHONY GRANT: Even an Oxford fan could count on one hand how many sub-par games Grant had. He was tenacious, had an unparalleled desire to win and dragged his team through so many difficult moments. Made all the more extraordinary given he was only on loan from Shrewsbury.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

DIALLANG JAIYESIMI: Had the start of his loan spell from Norwich City disrupted due to injury, but once he got on the pitch he was an absolute diamond. The highlight of his season was probably the equaliser away at Plymouth. Top class.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald:

JERRY YATES: Unquestionably the Robin to Doyle’s Batman, both his and Town’s season could have been so different had he not netted on the opening day away at Scunthorpe after an underwhelming pre-season. Eight months of tireless running followed with goal after goal, making Yates a strong fan’s favourite.

The deadline is midnight on Friday, June 26.

The winner is due to be announced during a ceremony due to be screened on the Supporters’ Club Facebook page on Monday, June 29 at 6.15pm.
