1943: Birth of a legend

Hometown hero Roger Smart is born in Swindon.

In 12 seasons with the club he would go on to make over 400 appearances and score 59 goals in Town colours, including the opener in 1969’s League Cup triumph over Arsenal.

During his time Smart also won promotion to Division 2 in 1963, and helped clinch both the Anglo-Italian Cup and Anglo-Italian League Cups.

1986: Fraser Digs in

Lou Macari brings in goalkeeper Fraser Digby for the first time, on loan from Manchester United.

He would return from United on another temporary stint the next season before being signed permanently in December.

Digby made 504 starts in total for Town, plus one more appearance from the bench.

2012: Spireites spring Wembley surprise

Town enter the hot favourites to overcome League One strugglers Chesterfield in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

But, they are turned over for the second time at the new Wembley Stadium, as an Oliver Risser own goal and Craig Westcarr strike saw the silverware head north.
