MANAGER Richie Wellens does not believe his Swindon team is inconsistent, despite Town having not chained consecutive results together since early December.

Though Wellens’ men top the fourth tier of English football, Town have not won two league games in a row since beating Grimsby away and Oldham at home on December 7 and 14, respectively.

The club’s last 10 League Two fixtures have seen five wins alternate between three defeats and two draws as a handful of dominant performances were left without a just reward.

However, when asked by the Adver whether Wellens thinks a more consistent stretch of wins might be just around the corner if victory against Northampton can be achieved, the Town boss preferred to take a more long-distance view on his team’s form.

He said: “We’ve lost two out of our last 18 league games – is that inconsistent?

“I’ll tell you what – if you were to tell me we would lose two of our final 14 games, I’d take it.”

The 39-year-old continued to state the reasons he felt points had been dropped over the last dozen games and admitted that any team he had available might have lost to Michael Flynn’s Newport County.

But when the Adver asked for clarification on whether Wellens thought his team had been inconsistent in terms of results in particular, the Town manager said: “Well we lost against Port Vale away – tough game against a team with one of the best home records in the league.

“We lose Mathieu Baudry and Ellis Iandolo early on, but we were still very good in the game.

“We switched off and concede two goals from outside the box.

“We lose at Newport when, even if we had our fully fit team out and we could have picked every one of our best players, we could still have lost there because of the way that they play and the state of the pitch.

“It was a very, very hard game for us – as Crewe and Plymouth and whoever else has to go there will find out because those teams I mentioned like to play football and it’s not possible there.

“We drew against Bradford with a makeshift team and they equalise in the 90th minute – not bad.

“We played Exeter and Crewe – won both. You can lose and draw football matches.

“Liverpool have won the most league games in the country – we’ve won the second most.

“Is that inconsistent? It just shows how far we’ve come.”
