STRIKER Eoin Doyle stated much of Swindon Town’s current squad is ‘too good for League Two’ following the club’s 2-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle on New Year’s Day.

A patched-up Town came from behind to claim their first victory over a top-10 outfit as Diallang Jaiyesimi and Doyle grabbed the all-important goals at Home Park.

Despite several first-team regulars not being involved in Devon due to injury, Swindon produced one of their most noteworthy performances of the season – something the Irish forward felt highlighted the squad’s character and overall ability.

And with six different members in the starting XI to the side that fell 2-0 away at Port Vale a few days earlier, Doyle insisted the team felt as strong as ever before taking on a promotion rival.

He said: “There is a lot of strength in depth in our squad. We made a lot of changes against Plymouth and still won.

“And I think when we were going on that streak when we won a lot of games consecutively and didn’t lose many, there wasn’t many changes in the team.

“Against Plymouth, there was five or six and it did not feel weakened at all. If anything it probably gave us a boost.

“I think there are a lot of bodies here that are too good for this league, and that’s credit to the manager and everyone at the club to be able to get a squad like that together.”

Two of the players Doyle singled out for adoration post-match were Lloyd Isgrove and Anthony Grant.

Isgrove shone out wide despite only just coming back from a lengthy injury lay-off while Grant was one of the standout performers once again even though he was asked to play out of position against a lively Argyle forward pack.

Doyle’s praise did not stop with those two – the 31-year-old hailed the ability of several others and believes Town are on track for promotion if the squad can be kept together through January.

He said: “When you’ve got the magic of Isgrove on the pitch – imagine Isgrove not getting in this team, or not getting in any team in this league or the league above.

“We had Anderson missing against Plymouth and we coped – it’s just really enjoyable as a striker to play in a team that has that much talent.

“And you look at Anthony Grant who is able to slip into centre back and be so comfortable, it’s a recipe for success.”
