SWINDON Town manager Richie Wellens said his team wanted to give the away support a performance they could be proud of in Wednesday’s win over Plymouth following a 2-0 defeat to Port Vale at the end of 2019.

Town lost their nine-game unbeaten run in League Two with a sub-par performance against Vale on December 29 but responded with verve and vigour to succeed 2-1 at Argyle on New Year’s Day.

Wellens was pleased with his team’s efforts throughout a largely successful 2019, but was unhappy with the way it ended in Burslem.

He said: “We finished 2019 off with – not a bad performance, but it was a little bit lacklustre in terms of what we expect.

“The energy levels weren’t there, and we ended up getting beat.

“We had a great 2019 in terms of the club as a whole, but we don’t want to be at this level.

“But for where we are at this moment in time, there is probably not much more we could have done.”

With 21 games remaining this season, Town are likely to require around 10 more wins to guarantee a spot in League One next season.

And the 39-year-old is confident those points can be acquired with the continued excellent support Town are receiving on their travels.

Wellens said: “We finished 2019 on a bad note, so it was important we came out against Plymouth and give those fans a boost.

“They got in their cars, or on the trains and came down to support us, so we felt we had to reward them with a performance.

“Even if we had lost that game, our energy levels and our play was really good.

“It’s not always just about the result, but we definitely owed the fans after they travelled up to Port Vale.”
