ROYAL Wootton Bassett 2s saw their faultless start to the Dorset and Wilts One North season end at the weekend after they fell to defeat away at mid-table Minety.

Following wins over Chippenham 2s, Trowbridge 2s, Marlborough 2s and Warminster, Bassett entered their latest tie having secured maximum points from their opening four fixtures.

But the Ballards Ash club couldn’t extend their winning groove into game week five as Minety registered a confidence-boosting 21-17 victory.

Bassett 2s’ loss means they are now a clear second in the table on 21 points while Minety jumped up to seventh following their second win from five of the season.

Bassett return to action on Saturday when travelling to face fifth-placed Melksham while Minety visit Frome 2s.

The weekend also saw two of the division’s struggling teams go head to head as Bradford-on-Avon travelled to Chippenham 2s.

Neither team had won this season prior to kick off on Saturday, and it was Chippenham who prevailed in this lowly contest – winning 40-17.

Chippenham moved onto six points from five fixtures while Bradford-on-Avon remained bottom of the pile with only two points secured from their opening five matches.

Bradford do have a chance, however, to kick start their 2019-20 season this weekend when hosting fellow strugglers Trowbridge 2s at home.

Chippenham 2s, meanwhile, travel to Calne.

In other results, Sutton Benger prevailed in what was always likely to be a stiff away trip to Marlborough 2s.

In-form Sutton Benger – who had won three of their opening four contests prior to kick-off on Saturday – registered another victory when downing the common outfit 22-34 away from home.

The result ensured Marlborough’s patchy form continued as they remain at the lower end of the table with only one win secured from five.

Sutton Benger, on the other hand, are now only six points shy of table-topping Frome 2s ahead of this weekend’s visit of Warminster.

Elsewhere, Warminster lost 21-27 at home to Frome 2s while Trowbridge 2s fell to a heavy 5-41 loss at home to Avonvale.

Lastly, Melksham won away from home - beating Calne 17-41.
