CLARRIE Dunbar finished second in the final of the national indoor Fantastic Fives competition staged last Sunday at Kempston Park IBC (Bedford).

This was the first time Clarrie had reached the last four in the mixed competition, which is played on two rinks comprising of singles (12 ends) and fours (eight ends) simultaneously, followed by 10 ends of three-wood pairs and two-wood triples.

Two points are awarded for a win in each of the four disciplines.

Four teams reached the final – Melton Pork Pies (Leics), Colchester Whites (Essex), Wey Valley (Guildford, Surrey) and Clarrie – who competed in a round-robin format.

After each team played three matches, Clarrie were tied second on 10 points alongside Melton Pork Pies.

The team of Graham Cox, John Arnold, Jo Dunford, Fred Pope and Teresa King then won a dramatic one-end shoot-out to claim runners-up spot.

In their first round-robin match, Clarrie Dunbar lost 6-2 to Melton before the bounced back to beat Colchester Whites 6-2.

The final round of round-robin games saw Dunbar take one discipline, triples, off Wey Valley and the points gained in a 6-2 defeat proved decisive as they finished tied with Melton in second on 10 points.

  • WILTSHIRE women bounced back from their heavy loss to the men last week in their annual county showdown at Chippenham Park.

They registered a massive 155-88 victory in their final friendly of the 2019 campaign over their Nor West League representative side at Box.

Wiltshire dominated proceedings throughout from start to finish.

Across the board they led 37-17 after five ends and had extended that to 77-37 at halfway.

They moved 117-66 ahead after 15 ends, 142-72 up at 18 before finally winning 155-88 after 21 ends.

Wiltshire took the honours on four of the six rinks and lost narrowly on the other two.

The foursome of Ann Roberts-Phare (North Wilts), Linda Perfitt (Westlecot), Mo Woolley (Alderbury) and skip Margaret Annetts (Salisbury) were the highest winning rink with a huge 44-4 success.

A 31-14 victory was recorded by the rink skipped by Karen Kirby (Blue Circle), while the foursome of Margaret Cooke (Broughton Gifford), Nancy Oliver (Salisbury), president Ruth Gerrish (Bradford-on-Avon) and skip Fizz Mace (North Wilts) also hit double figures in a 24-11 victory.

Ruth Gerrish’s last duties as county ladies’ president before handing over to Babs Salter (Wroughton) is to present the trophies to all the prize winners at the annual luncheon and presentation on Saturday, November 9 at Devizes.
