DAVID Howell’s BMW PGA Championship campaign came to a premature end at Wentworth yesterday.
The 44-year-old was again hurt by one disastrous hole, as he this time took eight shots to complete the par-four 15th towards the end of his round.
Admittedly, Howell’s hopes of making the cut were slim before his 15th hole flop. But it, without question, ended all hopes of a late surge into the competition’s top half.
Swindon-born Howell’s afternoon got off to a positive start, though he had to show mental strength to overcome an opening-hole bogey on the par four first.
Holes two, three, four and five saw Howell shoot two-under – as he registered birdies on the second, fourth and fifth with a bogey sandwiched between on the par-four third.
Howell’s topsy-turvy round continued on hole six, as he shot his third bogey of the day to place him level-par for his second round.
Though Howell birdied the eighth, his efforts were undone in the round’s later stages.
A bogey on the par-four 13th ensured his uphill battle continued, that was before his woeful efforts on the 15th.
Pars followed on holes 16 and 17 before Howell rounded off his afternoon with a birdie on the 18th.
