FORMER Swindon Town player Jon Gittens has died at the age of 55.

Gittens made a total of 165 appearances for Town between 1987 and 1991 and was part of the side that won the 1990 Division Two play-off final, defeating Sunderland 1-0 at Wembley.

Central defender Gittens first joined Swindon from Southampton in the summer of 1987.

His spell in Wiltshire ended in 1991 when he rejoined Saints after four successful seasons at the County Ground.

In a short statement on social media, Town posted: “The club is devastated to hear news of the passing of former defender, Jon Gittens.

“Jon made 165 appearances for the club between 1987 and 1991 achieving promotion in 1990. Gone too soon. Never forgotten.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Jon's family and friends at this time.”

Current Swindon Town Academy manager and former team-mate Alan McLoughlin posted his own tribute on social media.

McLoughlin said: “Can’t believe to hear that Gitto has passed away.

“Three clubs we shared together, hundreds of games together, thousands of hours training and travelling with our team-mates.

“Thank you for all the memories Gitto x.”
