RICHIE Wellens has stated Swindon Town should have beaten Grimsby Town when both teams last met in December, and has called on fans to bring the feel-good factor to the terraces for today’s game.

Grimsby’s four-game unbeaten run has re-ignited the Mariners’ play-off cause – which appeared to have been lost this time a month ago following four straight defeats.

But a remarkable turnaround for Michael Jolley’s side has seen them turn over MK Dons, Newport, Yeovil and Cheltenham – placing them onto 46 points from 33 games.

After being downed 2-1 at Blundell Park two months ago, Wellens hopes Town can possess a spring in their step with temperatures forecast to hit the mid-teens – a stark contrast to the wintry conditions presented to both teams when they last met.

He said: “We should have won the game (in December). I remember the weather was like a monsoon.

“Like a couple of other teams in this league, Grimsby tend to win three or four on the bounce and then lose three or four.

“At the moment they are on a good run, it’s up to us to disturb that and try to get another win in our column.

“We’re in good form as well, it will be a good game.”

No points for Town today would prove disastrous in their attempt to poach a play-off spot.

Despite their strong recent form, Wellens’ are still likely to require more than two points per game if they are to finish in the division’s top seven.

Therefore, the Town boss is keen to ensure the feel-good factor remains firmly locked inside the County Ground.

He said: “As soon as the games on Tuesday night kicked off, we went down four places.

“We’ve worked really hard to get ourselves into the chasing pack. We’ve now got to go on another good run to try and jump above that pack.

“We want to keep the feel-good factor going – and the best way to do that is to deliver results on the pitch and strong performances.”
