CENTRAL defender Luke Woolfenden could return to Swindon Town’s starting XI tomorrow to face Grimsby Town, after making a return to full-time training this week.

The Ipswich loan signing, who last week was boosted by news that his parent club agreed to extend his stay at Portman Road until 2022, has been missing from Richie Wellens’ squad since Town’s 1-0 loss at home to Crawley four weeks ago.

His absence is a result of picking up a calf injury in a friendly match against Bristol City on Tuesday, February 5.

But the promising centre half is set to be named in the squad for tomorrow’s League Two challenge against Grimsby Town. But whether he features in the starting line-up remains 50-50.

Wellens said: “Luke Woolfenden started training on Wednesday, it will be touch and go if we risk him from the start. But he will definitely be in the squad.

“He’ll get another day of training into him before the game, I’d imagine he will be fine.”

Experienced Matt Taylor is also set to make a return to the squad after missing last week’s game against Forest Green Rovers due to a calf knock.

However, midfielder Danny Rose – who signed from Portsmouth in January – will miss out and is also a doubt for next weekend’s visit of Colchester after scans on his calf came back worse than thought.

His void could be filled by Toumani Diagouraga, who has returned to full training having not made an appearance for Town since Cambridge’s visit in October.

Olly Lancashire will also remain absent for at least two weeks.

“Matt Taylor has trained for the past week, he felt his calf (against MK Dons) and quickly put his hand up and told us about his niggle,” said Wellens.

“We didn’t let the injury get to the stage where it was going to get worse.

“Danny Rose’s scan has come back a little bit worse, I would imagine it will be another 10 days for Danny before he is ready to play a game.

“Olly Lancashire still isn’t ready – it will probably be another couple of weeks.

“We’re taking one step forward and then moving two steps back. He’s back running, but we want to make sure he’s getting through the running before we put him back into full training.”
