SWINDON Town’s decision to freeze season ticket prices for their next campaign has been backed by manager Richie Wellens, who insists that the atmosphere generated inside the stadium on matchdays can benefit from it.

The club launched its ‘My Seat’ campaign on Saturday with fans able to secure their season ticket for the next campaign from Monday morning.

Prices remain the same, and Wellens has now issued a rallying call to the club’s supporters as he attempts to re-install the feel-good factor around the County Ground – which many fans state has been missing for several years.

Wins over promotion chasing sides Tranmere, Milton Keynes Dons and Forest Green Rovers have injected a proportion of optimism back into the terraces.

And ensuring that spirits remain growing at an exponential rate is born by planning ahead, according to the Town boss.

He said: “It’s important that we start planning ahead as we are on the playing side of it for the summer and next season.

“I think the club are right to try and get as many fans in as possible to generate that atmosphere and establish a better connection between the players and the supporters.

“We want more people in this place, because when it’s full it’s a tough place to play.

“You can feel it as a footballer. When the crowd is with you, if somebody knocks the ball into the channel everyone will cheer.

“If they’re not with you, everyone grumbles.

“Little things like that create confidence in the players, and the fans have been brilliant in the last two or three games.

“Things can change very quickly in football, I’m well aware of that. But if we can keep results positive and looking like we can move up the table then I’m sure the atmosphere will continue to grow.”

Meanwhile, Wellens suggested that Swindon Town’s postponed fixture against Newport County would take place in late March.

County – who valiantly bowed out of the FA Cup during round five against Premier League champions Manchester City – have already played seven times this month.

And Wellens believes manager Michael Flynn will be keen to get some rest into his players’ legs.

He added: “I’d imagine they will want that game to be delayed as much as possible.

“They have had so many games recently. I would have thought it will take place towards the end of March.

“They’ve done well in the FA Cup and had a game on Tuesday night – they will want to get some rest into his players before things kick on again.”
