TROWBRIDGE youngster Sarah Wilson produced a spectacular finish to claim victory at the second youth tetrathlon ranking competition of the year in Bath last weekend.

Starting the final laser-run leg, Wilson overhauled a deficit of almost a minute to cross the finish line in first place.

Wilson said: "I know I need to work on my fencing, but when I saw my combined time I nearly cried. I am really happy with that."

The event, held at the University of Bath, saw the top young pentathletes in the country competing for places in the Pentathlon GB team for upcoming international competitions.

This latest contest was made all the more interesting with the attendance of a visiting team of German athletes taking part.

The first event of the day was the 200m swim and Wilson clocked a steady time of 2mins 30.65secs to leaving her in 16th place.

Fencing was next on the agenda, and Wilson never really got into her stride, coming away with 16 victories and 12 defeats.

Although this moved her up into 11th place overall, she would go out 55 seconds behind the leader for the handicapped start of the laser-run.

However, Wilson – who was a recent recipient of Wiltshire Councils Funding future Olympians grant – put in the performance of her career to storm into the lead with a blistering time of 12mins 10secs to win the competition overall.
