TEENAGER Taylor Curran has been confirmed as Richie Wellens’ sixth signing of the January transfer window, signing on a two-and-a-half year deal from Southend United for an undisclosed fee.

The deal – subject to EFL and FA approval - means Curran, 18, will remain at the County Ground until June 2021.

Curran is yet to make an appearance in the Football League, but has spent time on loan this season at relegation threatened Braintree Town – currently bottom of the National League – amid his commitments with the Shrimpers’ U23s.

Wellens has signed the centre half with one eye towards the club’s future following last week’s announcement that defender Tom Broadbent had joined the club – also until 2021 – from Bristol Rovers.

On joining the club, Curran told Swindon Town’s official club website: “I’m looking forward to it – I got told on Friday that it was happening, and it’s just been about getting it done since then.

“I spoke to my agent and Ricky Duncan (Southend Under-23s manager) and we thought it was the best move for me.

“I’m still 18 so it’s pretty unbelievable and I’m just really over the moon.”
