SWINDON Town manager Richie Wellens has little doubt where Tranmere Rovers’ primary threat will come from as he targets another important League Two win this weekend.

Rovers boast the division’s top scorer in their ranks in James Norwood, with the striker having netted 17 times in the league this season and has 19 goals in 31 games in all competitions.

Tranmere currently sit ninth in the table, having continued the momentum that saw them promoted from the National League last season, and are currently three places and five points above Wellens’ side.

With Town desperate to put a run of form together that would bring them closer to the play-off places, three points against Micky Mellon’s Rovers at Prenton Park on Saturday would be most welcome.

“Tranmere were probably the biggest club in the conference. They have come up and used that momentum to carry on,” said Wellens.

“Micky is someone I know really well, he is a good manager.

“And they have got someone in the team who has scored 19 goals this season, so it is quite evident where the threat comes from.

“If we had someone with 19 goals, I’d love to see where we’d be in the league.

“It certainly helps and James Norwood is a striker in form – he takes every opportunity to shoot.

“He doesn’t complicate things or wait for the perfect opportunity to score, he is happy to shoot through bodies and shoot early. He scores all kinds of goals.

“We want to keep him as far away from our goal as possible.

“We don’t think he is going to out-run us – so I don’t think that’s a threat if we keep a high line – but around the box, he takes shots early and is quite selfish and ruthless in the way he plays.

“It’s up to us to carry on what we have been doing and try to keep our intensity up. We have to be defensively strong, but also try to take the game to them.”

The reverse fixture between the two sides was closely fought at the Energy Check County Ground earlier in the season, with Swindon battling back from an early 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 back in August.

However, Town were under the guidance of former manager Phil Brown back then and current boss Wellens says little can be read into the previous meeting.

“We haven’t talked about it as a lot has changed since then. We have a new manager and new players,” said Wellens.

“They will have changed themselves and have got two or three new players this month.

“It’s irrelevant. If you play a team early in the season and then late on in the season, it’s totally different.”
