ALEX Jacobs has become the first player from the Chippenham-based North Wilts IBC to book a place in a 2018/19 Area 16 indoor final this season.

Jacobs has qualified for the Area 16 singles final in the ladies Champion of Champions national competition.

This is just one step away from sealing a last 16 place in the Grand Finals of this national competition at Warner Leisure Hotels Lakeside, Hayling Island on February 1.

In her first match, Jacobs beat Bristol’s Ros Constant 21-9, then in the quarter-finals, defeated Jeanette Wheeler (Clarrie Dunbar) 21-11, and in the area semi-final she thrashed Nailsea’s Liz Taylor 21-3.

In the Area 16 Champion of Champions final, Jacobs will face Gill Fry from the MidGlos IBC (Brockworth, Gloucester) at Westlecot (Swindon) on December 9 with the winner qualifying for the last 16.

  • ALEX Jacobs was also in fine form last Friday and played a key role in North Wilts B team progressing to the next round in the Mason Trophy – ladies O60s double rinks competition.

North Wilts beat Clevedon 52-22 to ensure a second round tie against Purnell (Paulton) on December 7.

Jacobs skipped the rink of Ann Roberts-Phare, Jane Taylor, Irene Button and herself at home at North Wilts, clocking up a 37-5 victory that easily wiped out the 17-15 loss suffered away in Clevedon by Margaret Cooke, Eirona Carpenter, Bev Lilley and skip Sue Cooke.

However, the North Wilts A side were not so successful, losing their first-round tie on both rinks to Nailsea B 44-24.

The home rink of June Coyle, Lyn Brown, Jan Toombs and Fizz Mace lost 23-7 at Westcroft, while the away rink in Nailsea of Marie Greenwood, Pam West, Viv Baskerville and Betty Cowe lost 21-17.

  • WILTSHIRE'S county men's side held a friendly match at Westcroft for the first time against North Wilts and ran out comprehensive 181-73 winners.

Top county rink honours went to the foursome of Pete Sanders, Bob Walton, Keith Baker and skip Roger Button, who won 38-7.

  • NORTH Wilts' Andy Moore finished third in his group of four players in the Open Singles Grand Final Section A of the play-offs last weekend at Potters Leisure Resort, Norfolk.

Moore was one of four players from Wiltshire who qualified for the last 32 in last year’s rankings and competed in the OSC Grand Final.

The best place last weekend was former North Wilts player Wayne Snook, who plays indoors at Clarrie Dunbar but outdoors for Holt.

He topped Section A with nine points, winning all his three games, but was eliminated in the last 16 by City of Ely’s Ed Elmore.
