CALNE Town joint-manager Ben Redford was at a loss to explain just how his side managed to come from 3-1 down to snatch a late 4-3 win at home to Longwell Green Sports in the Toolstation League First Division on Saturday, writes JONATHAN LEIGHFIELD.

An 82nd-minute strike from Stuart Windsor started the comeback before Charlie Norman thought he had snatched a draw for Town with three minutes to play.

However, a 92nd-minute winner from Joe Williamson stole the points as Calne completed a heroic comeback at Bremhill View.

Matt Jenkins had earlier got Calne’s opening goal in the first half and Redford, who manages the Lilywhites alongside Clive McDaid, admitted that on another day, his side could have been well beaten.

“I’ve never witnessed anything like what I saw on Saturday because we were terrible. Longwell could have beaten us four or 5-1 if they had taken their chances,” said Redford.

“They went 3-1 up and could have made it four but our goalkeeper kept us in it. Then somehow with eight minutes to go, we’ve shown a bit of character and fought back.

“When we made it 3-3 so late on we thought we’d stolen a point – but then we managed to nick the win.

“It’s one of those where I can’t really explain the emotions of it.”

Redford described how a crucial intervention from his goalkeeper was the catalyst behind the comeback.

“At one point, Longwell were through on goal and it was almost like we’d given up, but the keeper made a class save,” said Redford.

“That would have made it 4-1 and it would have definitely been game over. But then we’ve scored with eight minutes to go and their heads dropped.

“We then put so much pressure on and got the equaliser late, and then in stoppage time got the winner too.

“It’s down to the character of the team. That never-say-die attitude.”

The win lifts Calne to second in the table, having not lost in the league since mid-September.

Redford believes his team have now turned the corner in terms of producing consistent performances.

“We’ve got a great squad this year and from what I’ve seen, we’re as good as anyone,” he said.

“It’s just about consistency. If we’d have lost on Saturday, that would have been typical Calne – beat the big teams and lose to a mid-table side at home.

“But I think we’re getting over that now and we’re proving that we’re a match for anyone and we can beat anyone on our day.”

Elsewhere, Corsham Town claimed a 2-0 victory over county rivals Warminster Town.

Chippenham Park shared a 2-2 draw at Wincanton Town, while Devizes Town went down 1-0 on their trip to leaders Chard Town.
